The following computing and technology requirements are intended to provide the minimum specifications for a successful technology experience at NUNM.

Hardware

For on-campus programs, a portable laptop computer is required for electronic testing, proctored exams, and other classroom activities.

For fully online programs, students must have either a portable laptop computer or a desktop computer capable of supporting all required coursework, online meetings, and proctored testing.

Minimum Hardware Requirements

  • Operating System: An up-to-date version of Windows or macOS. Tablets such as iPads and devices such as Chromebooks are generally insufficient for full program access and may not support all required coursework or proctored testing.
  • Processor: A modern multi-core processor, such as an Intel Core i5 or equivalent, AMD Ryzen 5 or equivalent, or Apple Silicon M-series processor.
  • Memory (RAM): 8 GB minimum; 16 GB or more is recommended for better performance and multitasking.
  • Storage: 256 GB or larger Solid State Drive (SSD).
  • Webcam: An integrated or external webcam capable of supporting video conferencing and online/proctored examinations.
  • Microphone: An integrated or external microphone. A headset or earbuds with a microphone are recommended for online meetings and coursework.
  • Wireless Connectivity: Reliable Wi-Fi capability.
  • Smartphone: A smartphone may be required for taking photographs, recording videos, or completing other course activities.

Students should ensure that their computer meets any additional hardware or software requirements specified by their program or by software used in individual courses.

Mobile Devices and Tablets

Chromebooks, iPads, Android tablets, and smartphones do not meet the minimum requirements for all NUNM coursework and should not be relied upon as a replacement for a laptop or desktop computer. These devices may be useful as supplemental devices but may not support required applications, electronic testing, or proctored examinations.

For assistance selecting a computer or verifying that your current computer meets these requirements, contact the IT Department at ITsupport@nunm.edu.

The NUNM Library may have computers available for temporary checkout that meet these requirements. For more information about library resources, contact library@nunm.edu.

Financial aid resources may be available to assist with the purchase of a computer that meets these requirements. For questions about financial aid options and eligibility, contact financialaid@nunm.edu.

Software

Operating System

Students must maintain a supported, up-to-date version of one of the following:

  • Windows
  • MacOS

Students should install operating system updates and security updates regularly to maintain compatibility and security.

Productivity Tools

Students should have access to Microsoft 365. Microsoft 365 applications and services are provided by NUNM to current students where applicable.

Email and Calendar

NUNM provides access to Outlook through Microsoft 365 for student email and calendar services.

Video Conferencing and Collaboration

Microsoft Teams is used for video conferencing, collaboration, and other instructional activities. Students should use the current supported version of the Teams application or the browser-based version when appropriate.

Some courses or programs may require additional software or applications. Students are responsible for ensuring that their computer meets the requirements for software used in their coursework.

Internet Requirements

Students must have a reliable, high-speed broadband internet connection capable of supporting video lectures, video conferencing, online coursework, and electronic or proctored examinations.

  • Minimum: 5 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload
  • Recommended: 25 Mbps download or higher and 5 Mbps upload or higher, particularly for frequent video conferencing, proctored examinations, or large file transfers.

Students can test their internet connection using an online speed-testing service such as Speedtest (https://www.speedtest.net).

Important: Internet speed alone does not guarantee a successful online testing experience. Students should also have a stable connection with sufficient reliability for the duration of an examination or other synchronous activity.
